Summer is the perfect time for adventures. Clara sets of for an adventure, a bus ride to grandma's house. Along the way she is joined by an interesting cast of characters, with a few nods to a classic story of a trip to grandma's. Dubuc's illustrations are charming and fresh, and they are full of lots of little secrets for children to discover.
Ice Cream Summer by Peter Sis Joe has a one track mind. Ice cream. Ice cream. Ice cream. Of course, he has lots to do and learn, so he just uses ice cream to help him. He reads ice cream flavours, calculates ice cream equations, and maps ice cream locations. Sis' illustrations, as ever, are beautiful and rich, full of lots of cheeky nods to the ice cream cone - I particularly like that mermaid on the bow of the ship is licking an ice cream cone. Delicious. |

Quiet and beautiful, I love this picture book so much. It is the story of one girl's summer vacation, always to the same place, a week at the beach each year. A cherished week, always the same. This year, there is something new, a friend. A friend just makes it better. The text is structured by day, counting down the week as the pages turn. The illustrations are subtly retro, and so reminiscent of beach life. Just lovely.
