Who needs words? Not the new picture books below, that's for sure. They are all beautiful and they have strong narratives, without the use of words. I am a huge fan of wordless picture books. I love the space they give children's imaginations. I love the confidence they can give a child struggling with reading. I love the conversations they generate. One even won the prestigious Caldecott Medal in 2012; A Ball for Daisy by Chris Raschka is a masterpiece. The illustrations are subtle, there is no text, but the emotions are so clear. I love the fall. I know it is not officially fall yet, but the publishers don’t know that and picture books from their fall lists are starting to arrive. I feel like it’s my birthday. Here are few you won't want to miss... A Library Book for Bear by Bonny Becker; illustrated by Kady MacDonald Denton In which Bear and Mouse visit the Library, and are shushed, repeatedly, but not by a librarian, for the record, and Bear discovers there is more to books than kings, queens and pickles.
Rupert Can Dance by Jules Feiffer A great read aloud, share this one with a group, especially a group that is familiar with our feline friends. Feiffer beautifully captures the complexity of cats, as he says "cats are free spirits." Meet the Parents by Peter Bently; illustrated by Sara Ogilvie It is not easy having parents, they make a lot of demands on you - brush your teeth, eat your peas, say thank you - but, sometimes, they come in really handy, like if you need a tent pole, or a horse, or a cuddle. Queen on Wednesday by Gabi Swiatkowska Thelma is bored. Bored. So she decides to become a queen, and uses her reign to beat the boredom. Beautifully quirky. What if...? by Anthony Browne Joe is off to his first party and he is full of anxiety. Browne masterfully unfurls Joe's worries, and his mother's quiet reassurance. |
