Last, but certainly not least, our favourite non-fiction books of the year. A difficult category, there are a lot of books, books on every possible subject, to choose from. If we based our list on most popular, highest circulation, then it would be all books about Minecraft. Instead, we chose just one Minecraft book, one LEGO book, and then everything from poetry to earmuffs. A fun and informative list of books! A printable list of all of our favourites: Now we rush to finish the tall stacks of books on our bedside tables in time to start reading all the great books that will arrive in 2016. Wishing happy reading to one and all!
On Saturday, December 19 at 10:00 am, Kitchener Public Library is hosting a very special event. Author Roch Carrier will be here. He will be here to read his iconic picture book, The Hockey Sweater.
Do you remember the story? A young boy growing up in Quebec worships Rocket Richard and the Montreal Canadiens. All he wants is a Canadiens hockey sweater. His mother writes to the Eaton company to order a sweater, but alas, what arrives but a Toronto Maple Leafs sweater. The horror, the disgrace, he cannot possibly wear this sweater. Carrier’s childhood recollections are vivid and so Canadian. You may also remember the NFB short film based on the book, The Sweater. You can watch it here: National Film Board. Join us for a morning of fun and celebration. Kids can make a button, decorate an ice skate, and more. There will be treats, and a chance to win two tickets to the Yuletide Spectacular at Centre in the Square (Sunday matinee), courtesy of the KW Symphony. We’re so excited to be able to offer this free event for the families of Kitchener. Don’t miss this chance to hear Roch Carrier, former National Librarian of Canada, and to celebrate Canada at this special time of year. Everyone is welcome! It was a good year for children’s fiction. When compiling the staff picks, I was struck by the range of genres and topics these children’s novels and graphic novels covered. Here we have historical fiction, fantasy, horror, and contemporary stories which touch on themes including immigration, gender identity, and the perils of social media. These are great choices for the children in your life. The easy reader collections at Kitchener Public Library are thriving and in high demand. Over the past few years the use of these collections has consistently increased. It is really exciting to see so many brand new readers finding the books that are just at just the right level to help them build confidence and become lifelong readers. This year we were lucky to add lots of great titles to our collections. Here are our favourites: Each year I ask the Children’s and Teen Services staff to submit their favourite books of the year. One of the most contentious categories is always the picture books. We LOVE picture books and we read a lot of picture books. This year our long list included 35 great titles, titles which staff feel passionately about. It was no easy task getting it down to a top ten, but we did it. Below our very favourite picture books of the year. Enjoy! |
