The Animals’ Ark
by Marianne Dubuc
Here is another lovely picture book from one of my favourite Canadian author-illustrators, Marianne Dubuc. As the pip-pop-pip of the rain goes on and on, the animals are happy to be invited aboard a big boat by a kindly old man. Once aboard, the animals' antics begin, with each finding their own place and ways to entertain each other. The simple text and charming illustrations will make this an excellent read aloud.
Ages 2 and up.
Lion Lessons
by Jon Agee
The boy in this story is not interested in learning yoga, knitting, Spanish, or karate. He chooses to take lion lessons. In seven simple steps he learns everything it takes to be a lion, of course, his progress is not very promising, he is not fierce, fast, or stealthy; however, he does exceed at the final step, “looking out for your friends.” This story is full of Agee’s typical quirkiness, humour, and deep understanding of children. A joy to share! Ages 3 – 7.
Hare and Tortoise
by Alison Murray
As in the Aesop classic, hare is the fastest animal around, and tortoise is as slow as can be. Set on a farm, and full of vibrant illustrations, and a pithy, snappy text, this is will make a fabulous read aloud, with a good lesson about winning and losing. Ages 3 – 7.
And, now for something for something a little different...
Happy Birthday, Alice Babette
by Monica Kulling and Qin Leng
We have here a picture book about a day in the life of Alice B. Toklas and Gertrude Stein. It is Alice’s birthday, but Gertrude doesn’t wish her a happy birthday. Alice assumes Gertrude has forgotten, but instead as Alice wonders through Paris, we see that Gertrude is busy preparing a surprise. This is sweet story and charming picture book that can be enjoyed by those who know the couple, and those who don’t. It would pair beautifully with Gertrude is Gertrude is Gertrude is Gertrude by Jonah Winter, if you can find a copy!
