Sometimes a children’s book turns up on my desk and it just makes my day better. Today that book was In My Heart: A Book of Feelings by Jo Witek, illustrated by Christine Roussey. Originally published in France, I am very happy this book has been released in North America. Picture books which deal with the complex idea of emotions are in big demand, and there really are not a lot of great ones, especially for young children. The design of this book is beautiful. It features a series of concentric cut-out hearts. So on each page spread there is a peak-a-boo heart. It begins... Each two page spread highlights a different feeling. Sometimes her heart is a bright, happy, shining star. Sometimes her heart feels like it is going to explode with anger. Mean words make her heart hurt. They make her heart feel "fragile and delicate." When she is sad her heart "feels as heavy as an elephant." It ends with a question to the reader. "How does your heart feel today?" Well, I know that my heart feels better after reading this little gem. The text and illustrations work together perfectly, and you can't help but smile and want to share it with children and adults alike.
