At the risk of sounding like an annoying television commercial, I must inform you that it is time to think about going back to school. Or, at least that is what the latest stack of picture books to cross my desk has to say. Kitchener Public Library has received a nice shipment of school focused picture books. So, it must be time to get ready for back-to-school. No? Well, it is definitely time for sharing some good, new picture books! My favourite of this bunch is definitely My Teacher is a Monster! (no, I am not) by Peter Brown. It is in Brown's retro style, using subdued colours, and it showcases his very wry sense of humour. It is the tale of Robert and his monster of a teacher. She stomps and roars at Robert’s class room antics. Then, one Saturday Robert meets Miss Kirby at the park, out in the real world, and slowly he realizes she might not be the monster after all. I love that it is dedicated to “misunderstood teachers and their misunderstood students.” A great story to share with your little monsters. Ages 4 and up.
