Near, Far
by Silvia Borando
A big thank you to Candlewick Press for bringing these little Italian gems to North America - these wordless books are visually stunning and stimulating. In Now You See Me, Now You Don’t Borando presents a fun two page spread of oddly cheerful animals. Through the rest of the book, an animal disappears from each spread. Children are subtlety invited to pour over the illustrations to determine who is missing. Simple and effective. Near, Far plays with perspective, again inviting children to pay close attention and to interact with the book.
With Any Luck, I’ll Drive a Truck
by David Friend, illustrated by Michael Rex
This book is many a preschooler’s wish fulfillment. The narrator lets us know that at two he could make concrete, at three could run a backhoe, and by six could operate a snow plow. We get glimpse into the imagination that made it all happen and of course the goal for the future: “When I grow up…you know wassup. With any luck, I’ll drive a truck.” Well rhymed text, and charming illustrations, featuring lots of vehicles, will make this a great read aloud.
Worm Loves Worm
by J.J. Austrian; illustrated by Mike Curato
Love is love is love, even for worms. Worm and Worm love each other and they want to get married. Their friends have lots of questions about how it will work, who is who, and who wears what, but Worm and Worm know that all that really matters is love. A gentle and adorable take on acceptance.
